Vermeil is gold plated sterling silver: a 925 silver base with a gold layer of at least 2.5 microns. Our vermeil runs 925 silver under 2.5 microns of 18K gold on the same 4-layer plating system used across the factory, so the piece keeps the silver's hypoallergenic base with a thicker gold finish than standard plating.
The base metal. Gold plated brass uses brass, which suits larger statement pieces at a lower unit cost; vermeil uses 925 sterling silver, which is hypoallergenic and takes the gold layer with better wear behavior. Buyers pick vermeil when the customer cares about skin sensitivity and the brand wants to say sterling silver, and brass when price point leads.
With normal wear, the 2.5 micron layer lasts noticeably longer than standard 0.5 to 1 micron plating, but no plating is permanent — perfume, sweat and lotion speed up wear. Care cards ship with bulk orders, and the protective top coat in our 4-layer system extends the finish. Re-plating services can be discussed for repeat runs.
